This narrative continues with today’s release of Covered: Alive in Asia, marking Israel & New Breed’s 15th year of ministry as a group and 10th released album. With 13 tracks (16, if you grab the Deluxe Edition), the album is the culmination of live recordings across the continent of Asia– hitting venues in Jakarta, Indonesia, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Korea, Tokyo and Manila.
Covered: Alive in Asia is sheer musical brilliance, marked by both high-energy, singable praise anthems and powerfully intimate worship choruses. The project opens with the upbeat and pop-laced “Thank You Lord” and “Risen,” before transitioning to the rousing “My Strength,” rich with lush harmonies, chords and musical progressions.
Houghton invites fitting guest appearances from Tye Tribbett on the infectious “Chasing Me Down” and BJ Putnam on the traveling “Our God Reigns.” Israel & New Breed deliver an R&B-vibed remake of the popular Darlene Zschech worship tune “In Jesus Name,” as well as a refreshing arrangement of Jesus Culture’s “One Thing Remains,” before moving to the album’s worship lead single, “Covered.” The beautifully melodic and guitar-driven “Breathe Your Name” follows seamlessly, as does “Already Done,” featuring the impeccable vocals of Jonathan McReynolds.
The album concludes beautifully with the grateful and contemplative “First Loved Me,” and the gospel-rich “How Awesome Is Our God,” featuring the incomparable Yolanda Adams. The Deluxe Edition includes several additional tracks– the musically-militant “I Will Live,” “I Am Loved,” and a cover of the popular worship anthem, “Mighty to Save.”
With world-class production and heart-piercing songs from Hougton and longtime writing and production partner Aaron Lindsey, Covered: Alive in Asia is both ear-candy for the most musically-inclined palate and food for the simply spiritually hungry.
