BLOG: 5 Things Becoming A Father Has Taught Me | @JarridWilson

Other than getting married to my beautiful wife, having our first child has to be one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had the privilege of living through. Words cannot describe how much I love my little boy. And while we’re only about six-weeks into this journey called parenthood, I’ve already begun learning a few things that I believe are worth sharing.

 1. My wife is a champ.  Seriously, I don’t know how you ladies do it. You are super heroes! I cannot begin to understand the pain and discomfort my wife felt, not only during her pregnancy but also while giving birth. The epidural helped a little bit, but I cannot imagine what it would be like for someone to literally birth a human being. I’m getting a little queasy just thinking about it. Seriously, though. I’m blown away by the strength of my wife, and I have found myself falling more and more in love with her since the day our son was born. My wife is a champ, and she has given us one of the greatest gifts in the world.

2. There’s no time for pride.  There’s no time to argue who’s right or who is wrong. Why? Because it’s just not that important compared to taking care of the needs and wants of our little boy. There is no time for pride in parenting, let alone a marriage or any other relationship for that matter. Pride and parenting don’t mix.

 3. There’s no time for laziness.  Laziness and parenting cannot coexist with one another. There is no time to be lazy when you have the life of someone else in your hands. Not only would laziness be a waste of precious time, but it’s also setting a bad example for my son—no matter how small he is right now.

4. Everything I do must have a purpose.  There is no time to waste time. Everything I do in life needs to have a reason  and should be done with purpose. If it’s not helping me become a better husband, father, Christian or leader, then I need to get rid of it and replace it with something that brings value towards my family.

 5. I have a deeper understanding for God’s love towards his children.  God’s love for his children is something I’ve always known, but becoming a father myself has completely transformed the way I see God’s love for his children. It’s a beautiful experience that I believe will deepen my understanding of God, his purpose for my life and the way he directs each and every one of us.  —Jarrid Wilson
